Woke up this morning in Paducah,Kentuckyand just across the river we found Metropolis. You know the place, where Superman lives! I was so excited, I made Big drive down in to town so I could see the “Giant” Superman statue. There were lots of references to Superman and Metropolis as we were driving in, but I was disappointed that there wasn’t more. I got out and toured the downtown area, even saw the statue of Noel Neill – considered the First Lady of Metropolis – Noel played Lois Lane in the TV show in the 1940’s and 1950’s.
As we continued our journey today, we passed by the Oz Museum inWamego,Kansas. Those of you who know me, know that I have a big aversion to anything Oz related. So, needless to say, we didn’t stop. At our house, when the Wizard of Oz comes on, I start screaming “Turn it off, Turn it off” and my head practically spins off my shoulders until it happens. I don’t think my kids have ever actually seen the movie. A few years ago, Relay for Life used “There’s No Place Like Hope” for a theme and everyone went with an Oz theme for their camp areas. I swear I have never seen so much Wizard of Oz stuff in one place, maybe if we had stopped at the museum I would have. I just can’t get over the flying monkeys, they keep me up at night. The only other movie from my childhood that has the same effect is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I can’t watch that one either. I must have had some serious issues as an 8 year old.
Just to set the record clear, I love Wicked, just not Wizard of Oz, although the flying monkeys bothered me on stage too – at least in Wicked the Wicked Witch was really the Good Witch.
